Everything we’ve seen of Sony’s reboot of 1995’s Jumanji has indicated that this new incarnation will be nothing like the original. And today’s trailer does, indeed, confirm that speculation.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle does away with the original board game and instead replaces it with an old video game (presumably to appeal to millennials). Another major difference, rather than elements from the board game invading our world, the players get sucked into the digital jungle world of Jumanji. They assume the bodies of their avatars, played by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan.
Look, I’ll be the first to admit, this isn’t anything like the original. Heck, even the original mechanics of the movie/game don’t even match up. In fact, you could just about slap any title onto this movie and it would work. Sony is clearly just trying to capitalize on the name “Jumanji.” But it looks entertaining, and the cast seems fun.
This isn’t the Jumanji we grew up watching. But it doesn’t have to be. In fact, I think it would be worse if they did try to capture that old school magic of Robin Williams. It just wouldn’t be possible. Instead, this is an entirely different take on the game, and that’s okay.
